An appeal by Philander Chase, Bishop of Illinois, on behalf of a Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary for the Diocese of Illinois. This document provides insight into the efforts to establish and fund religious education in the early American West. It highlights the challenges and aspirations of building a theological institution, reflecting the broader historical context of religious development and institutional growth in the region.
This appeal offers a valuable primary source for understanding the priorities and concerns of religious leaders in the 19th century, and sheds light on the intersection of religion, education, and community building in the expanding American frontier.
