The story
SuperMe is the quiz everybody is doing. You answer twenty questions and it works out your superpower and prints you an Official Hero Card, gold border, purple starburst, lightning drawn in behind you. Amber Sharma is MISS LIGHTNING. Her twin Arun is THE SILVER SHADOW. Dev has decided his soul contains mostly football and is confident of CAPTAIN STATISTIC.
Maya looks at the card properly, because looking at things properly is rather her whole reputation. And there at the bottom, under the photograph, on a shiny card being passed hand to hand round a crowd like a bag of crisps, is Amber's full name, her year and her school.
Something itches at the back of Maya's brain. It is the feeling you get when a step is not quite where your foot expected it.
The tell
The question ladder. The quiz warms you up with nineteen fun, easy, harmless questions, and puts the private one at the end, when stopping feels like losing. A fair question does not need nineteen fun ones in front of it.
Nan's question does the rest: what is it FOR? A quiz needs your answers. It does not need your address to tell you your superpower. When something asks for more than its job needs, the asking is the real job.
The treasure
Your full name, your school, your address and photos of you are the full set of you. Each piece looks small. Together they tell a stranger exactly who you are and where to find you.
And photos do not fly home. Once you send one you cannot take it back and you cannot see where it goes. If a card or a game needs a picture of you, a drawing does the job and stays in the room.
What your child will be able to do
Identify personal information: full name, address, school and photographs. Refuse requests for it from apps, forms, quizzes, chatbots and strangers. Stop, and tell an adult.
Curriculum
Aligned to the National Curriculum for England, Computing at Key Stage 2 online safety (use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; know ways to report concerns) and statutory Relationships Education, being safe and online relationships. Maps equally to the Curriculum for Wales Digital Competence Framework (Citizenship: identity, image and reputation) and Health and Well-being, Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence (Technologies TCH 1-03a and 2-03a, and Health and Wellbeing HWB 2-15a), and the Northern Ireland Curriculum (Using ICT, digital security and privacy, and PDMU Strand 1). US grades 2 to 5, elementary, Australia and New Zealand Years 3 to 6. Not endorsed or accredited by any government body.
Reading it
Ten chapters, about 7,900 words, for readers aged 7 to 11, with Maya's Safety Spotter Tips at the back. Nobody is shamed for doing the quiz. Several of them already have.
Good for
Online privacy for kids, explained in a way that survives contact with a genuinely tempting free thing. Personal information and data taught at the exact age children start filling in forms nobody checks. Internet safety for kids, online safety for kids and cyber safety for kids, with screen time framed as a judgement question rather than a timer.
