Some of the greatest Church fathers, scholars, and academics have wrestled with 2nd Thessalonians 2, and have just walked away, scratching their heads, as to what the Apostle Paul was trying to convey. This is evidenced by the statement of one of the greatest known Church Fathers in history, Saint Augustine.
Many have brought forth plausible explanations. Some have put forth some very imaginative ones. During the Reformation, it was commonly held that the Papal Seat was the Man of sin. Those who seek to interpret according to the current sociopolitical situation of Paul's day, have opted for Nero Caesar as the Man of sin. The Futurists have created this entity known in today's pop-culture as, The Antichrist. They equate the Man of sin with this Antichrist.
However, there is an identity of the Man of sin, which has not been well explored. It is not an entity that we must create out of thin air, and read back into the text. It is an entity that is mentioned throughout the gospels and the Apostolic writings. If we listen, the Bible will explain itself.
When we understand who this Man of Lawlessness is, the Apostasy and the Mystery of Lawlessness becomes much clearer.
