Few themes exercised a more profound influence upon the medieval imagination than the expectation of the end of history. Throughout the Middle Ages, men and women interpreted wars, epidemics, famines, dynastic conflicts, ecclesiastical controversies, and natural disasters through narrative frameworks drawn from sacred scripture. The language of apocalypse was not confined to monasteries, scriptoria, or schools of theology. It resonated from cathedral pulpits, village churches, urban squares, crusade assemblies, and royal courts. Through preaching, visions of the approaching Judgment, the coming of Antichrist, the tribulations of the faithful, and the final triumph of God entered the public sphere and shaped collective understandings of authority, legitimacy, community, and power. Medieval apocalyptic preaching was therefore not merely a religious phenomenon. It was also a political one.
