Lies and misinformation. Character assassination. Fake news and journalism bias. Political pressure for power. This is not a modern story, but one from 1889 in the Wyoming Territory. One of the first individuals to stand up against the 'Cattle Barons' of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and win, Andrew Jackson Cooper may have been one of the early killings related to the conflict that escalated in the 1800s between small ranchers, homesteaders, and the more influential large cattle operations in the State. His accomplishments, as well as his murder, are rarely mentioned and most often misrepresented in history. By reviewing the context of the times, the history and associations of the individuals involved, and the evidence that is available, it is possible to more accurately place Cooper in history, as well as possibly reveal motivations behind his death.
