Among Cannibals is a travelogue written by Carl Lumholtz, detailing his experiences during four years of exploration in Australia, particularly in the state of Queensland. The book provides a vivid and detailed account of Lumholtz's encounters with the indigenous people of Australia, specifically the Aborigines of Queensland. Lumholtz's narrative is structured around his various expeditions into the Australian wilderness, where he lived among the Aborigines and learned about their culture, customs, and way of life. He describes in detail the various tribes he encountered and their unique practices, such as their hunting techniques and their use of medicinal plants. The book also provides a glimpse into the harsh realities of life for the Aborigines, who were often mistreated and exploited by European settlers. Lumholtz recounts the stories of Aborigines who were forced to work on sugar plantations or were subjected to brutal treatment by white colonizers. Throughout the book, Lumholtz reflects on the complexities of cross-cultural interaction and the challenges of understanding a culture vastly different from his own. He also reflects on the impact of colonialism on the Aborigines and their way of life. Overall, Among Cannibals is a fascinating and insightful account of Australian indigenous culture, as well as a reflection on the impact of colonialism on the people and the land. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
