The mid-century conservative revival-led by figures such as Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley Jr.-reasserted constitutionalism and free-market ideals, but it also opened the door for a deeper moral argument: that America's strength was inseparable from its religious heritage. This conviction set the stage for the transformational alliance between evangelicals and conservatives in the late 1970s and 1980s.
