American Miniatures, 1730-1850 offers an exhaustive and curated exploration of the delicate art of portrait miniatures during a pivotal century of American history. Authored by Harry Brandeis Wehle, this work presents one hundred and seventy-three carefully selected portraits that capture the faces and fashions of early America.
Spanning from the late colonial era through the mid-19th century, the collection serves as both an artistic gallery and a historical record of the prominent figures and private citizens of the time. Each miniature is accompanied by a descriptive account, providing essential context on the sitters and the artists who mastered the intricate, small-scale medium. From the refinement of the 18th century to the evolving styles of the mid-19th century, this volume highlights the technical skill and emotional intimacy inherent in miniature painting.
Scholars and enthusiasts of American art history will find this a vital resource for understanding the development of portraiture and the personal narratives woven into these small yet significant works of art. This comprehensive study remains a testament to the enduring charm and historical importance of the miniature format in American visual culture.
