The American Fifth Column examines how a free republic can lose the substance of self-government without ever formally renouncing it.
Drawing on the strategy of gradualism first refined by the British Fabian Society-the patient colonization of existing institutions rather than revolutionary rupture-this book traces the intellectual and institutional pathway by which administrative management has steadily displaced constitutional limitation in the United States. From Progressive-era foundations and the expansion of expert rule, through the construction of a permanent administrative architecture, to the mature complex of career networks, contractors, and insulated agencies that continue policy trajectories across elections, the work shows how forms of republican government can persist while accountability, federalism, separated powers, and the practical scope of liberty are progressively eroded.
The analysis is unflinching about consequences. Regulatory accumulation, speech and association pressures, enforcement asymmetries, and the narrowing of legitimate disagreement are examined as the lived results of institutional capture. The book further considers how these internal vulnerabilities interact with external authoritarian influence and domestic movements that seek to accelerate collectivist transformation, turning the administrative apparatus into a force multiplier against limited government.
