Dr. Caron Leid spent twenty years caring for her mother, Marlene, who developed early-onset Alzheimer's disease at just 57 years old. But this is not simply another book about Alzheimer's disease, and it is not a traditional caregiving manual.
It is about caregiving itself.
The loneliness. The anger. The love. The anticipatory grief. The family dynamics. The moments of absurdity. The things caregivers think but are afraid to say. The advice that sounds wonderful until you try to apply it to real life. And the complicated truth that you can love someone deeply while desperately wanting pieces of your own life back.
Drawing from personal journals, lived experience, research, and the candid accounts of other caregivers, Leid examines the enormous gap between what families are told about caregiving and what actually happens once they are living it.
There are no perfect caregivers in these pages.
There are human beings doing their best in circumstances for which almost nobody is adequately prepared.
