Some pictures wait a lifetime to bring you home.
Tom Carter takes photographs for a living, and he can't remember the last one that meant anything.
At fifty-five, his marriage long behind him and his London studio a place he goes rather than a place he loves, Tom has quietly settled for a smaller life than the one he once imagined. He's good at his job. He's fine on his own. He's stopped expecting more.
Then his fourteen-year-old daughter, Emily, sharp-eyed and merciless in the way only a teenager can be, uncovers the one thing Tom has spent forty years refusing to look at: a single summer in Galway when he was fifteen, a girl named Niamh, and a photograph of a rusted anchor on a beach that turned out to be the finest thing he would ever make.
Now Emily wants to see the place for herself. So Tom drives west, back to a small guesthouse above the Atlantic, back to the woman he left behind and somehow never quite left, and back to the person he used to be before he taught himself to want less.
What waits for him in Galway is everything he stopped believing was meant for him, and a question, scrawled in a boy's notebook and carried across four decades, that he is finally ready to answer.
Warm, wry, and quietly devastating, Always, Galway is a love story about the distance we keep from the things we need most, the courage it takes to close it, and the discovery that home was never as far away as we let ourselves believe.
The final novel in the Galway Girl Trilogy, it stands completely on its own, a book for anyone who has ever wondered what might have happened if they'd been brave enough to go back.
Perfect for readers of Mike Gayle, David Nicholls, and Josie Silver.
