The Almost True Tales of Barkarina Frecklebelly and The Gryff The following excerpt is from the story Puffy Pillow Pull: Barkarina Frecklebelly was still feeling playful, so she grabbed the corner of the huge, puffy dog pillow and began to yank. Well ...it was simply too much temptation for The Gryff to ignore. He clenched the large pillow's opposite corner between his fine terrier teeth and then, facing Barkarina, he began to pull with all his Norwich heart in the opposite direction! ... The most wonderful of games! Round and round the room they race! Pull! Tug! Bonk on the sofa! Bounce off the ottoman... Suddenly, the unnerving rasping sound of cloth tearing hung in the air. Barkarina Frecklebelly and The Gryff are two perfectly happy, perfectly loved and perfectly mischievous pups. Join them as they sniff and romp their way to adventure in shoulder-deep-bone-chilling snowdrifts, murky-mucky-slimy-green ponds, towering-high-above-your-head lavender-colored grasses, and the lair of one highly pugnacious parrot in this delightful book of stories from debut author Joann Lanker Williams. The dogs are real, their families are genuine, and the tales? Well, they're almost true. If you've ever loved a dog, or if a dog has ever loved you, this book will become an instant favorite. Williams spins her yarns with warmth and a twinkling humor that will endear them to readers of all ages. Gather around for shared reading at bedtime or gift this colorful, illustrated chapter book to a developing reader who will adore these tales even as they expand their vocabulary. The author recommends the book for the more advanced middle grade reader; ages 7-10. One imaginative early reader even reenacted her favorites over a period of several days. As a mother, grandmother, principal, and teacher, Williams has spent her life nurturing the hearts and minds of children. Her work encourages a love of reading by entertaining young readers and embracing age-appropriate language and subject matter. Williams is available for club and classroom readings and presentations.
