First published in 1865, the story joins a child's adventure to jokes about logic, language, manners, and authority. A lesson becomes an absurd poem; a game becomes an argument; a trial confuses evidence with accusation. Wonderland is funny partly because Alice recognizes so much of it. The creatures interrupt, contradict, explain badly, and insist upon rules they cannot consistently follow. Her efforts to understand them give the book its momentum and its enduring pleasure for readers of different ages.
This Clearview Large Print Edition presents all twelve chapters of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in a 7 x 10-inch hardcover. The 190-page interior uses approximately 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next body type with generous line spacing. Its open setting is intended for sustained reading, whether the book is being read privately, shared aloud, or revisited a chapter at a time. The volume contains Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; it does not include the separate sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
Verse and wordplay are central to the experience. Familiar lessons return in altered forms, the Mock Turtle sings of beautiful soup, and the Mouse tells a tale whose shape makes its own joke. This edition arranges the complete Mouse's tale on one page while retaining large type. The story's language and punctuation are preserved through documented typographic treatment, including corrected quotation marks and the joining of a word that had been split across a line in the earlier typesetting.
Two historical illustrations by John Tenniel accompany the text. A picture of the King in court serves as the frontispiece, and a sleeping Gryphon appears beside the passage that invites the reader to look at it. Both were reproduced from a 1905 Macmillan school edition held by the Library of Congress. These are two selected illustrations, not a claim to reproduce a complete historical illustration suite. They give the story's particular references a visible counterpart while allowing the large-print narrative to remain the focus.
A brief publisher's disclosure and closing edition note identify the text's Project Gutenberg origin, the historical illustration source, and the edition's typesetting choices. They also explain the publisher's responsibility for its editorial and production work and provide a way to report errors. The apparatus is concise so that Carroll's story remains the principal reading experience.
For a returning reader, the pleasure may lie in rediscovering the precise turns beneath the nonsense. For a first encounter, it may be Alice's determination to keep her bearings when no one else will help. This edition offers room to follow both: the immediate comedy of Wonderland and the questions about sense, identity, and grown-up authority that continue after Alice wakes.
