The Algerine Captive is a historical novel written by Doctor Updike Underhill and published in 1816. The book is a first-person account of the life and adventures of Doctor Updike Underhill, who was held captive by Algerian pirates for six years during the late 18th century. The novel begins with Doctor Underhill's capture by Algerian pirates while he was on a voyage to Europe. He is taken to Algiers and sold into slavery, where he is forced to work as a laborer and endure the harsh treatment of his captors. Throughout the novel, Doctor Underhill recounts his experiences as a prisoner, including his attempts to escape and his interactions with other captives. He also provides insight into the culture and customs of the Algerians, as well as the political climate of the time. The novel is notable for its vivid descriptions of life in captivity and its portrayal of the complex relationships between captives and their captors. It also sheds light on the historical context of the Barbary Wars, a series of conflicts between the United States and North African states in the early 19th century.Overall, The Algerine Captive is a compelling historical novel that provides a unique perspective on the experiences of prisoners of war and the cultural dynamics of the time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
