Algebra 1: Part 2: Foiling and Factoring is different than your typical math workbook. It was written by a math tutor with 20 years of experience teaching math one-on-one, then edited by educational researchers and beta tested by students. Sarah Allen has worked with thousands of students over the years, covering everything from Algebra 1 through Calculus. She has seen the small details that trip students up, the things that are glossed over or not taught in classes that then make problems confusing, and the skills that are so essential that if you don't build them early on, you'll struggle in later math classes.
In Algebra 1: Part 2, Sarah Allen dives into the nuts and bolts of doing Algebra. Her educational philosophy is that it's important to understand concepts completely, rather than just memorize a bunch of processes. In keeping with that idea, Sarah starts with the fundamental basics of what Algebra is, and then builds the processes of doing algebra up from there.
The goal of this book is to build a deep understanding alongside complete mastery of skills. To that end, every concept is followed by sets of practice problems, with frequent review sets every few chapters, with the different types of questions mixed together so that students can practice choosing which skills to apply when.This book dives in deep on:
- Solving Equations: 1-Step Equations, 2-Step Equations, Equations with Variables on Both Sides, and Equations with Fractions and Decimals
- Polynomials: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Factoring
- Ratios and Proportions
- Rearranging Equations for a Given Variable
- Radicals: Simplifying, Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing, Solving Equations, Writing as Exponents
It also includes many helpful calculator tricks for those students using TI-84 calculators.
This book is structured to build those fundamental skills, and to build them in such a way that you'll remember them long term and be able to apply them in your future math classes. Every chapter has worked examples, then sets of practice problems. Every few chapters there is a set of review exercises that are a mix of problems you've learned so far. There are also tests along the way and a full unit test at the end. This way, you're getting repeated exposure to all the different skills.
After working with thousands of students, Sarah Allen wanted to create a book that would build those fundamental skills so that students would feel confident and comfortable in math. After much writing, editing, and beta testing, this book is the result!
