General Estoria is a monumental 13th-century universal history commissioned by King Alfonso X of Castile, famously known as El Sabio (the Wise). This ambitious work represents one of the most significant literary and historiographical projects of the Middle Ages, aiming to compile the entire history of the world from its biblical origins through the Greco-Roman era and beyond. Volume 1 of this scholarly edition, edited by Antonio G. Solalinde, focuses on the foundational stages of this vast narrative, blending scriptural accounts from the Old Testament with classical mythology and ancient historical chronicles.
The work is a cornerstone of medieval prose, showcasing the linguistic evolution of the vernacular and the intellectual sophistication of the Alfonsine court. It serves as an essential resource for understanding medieval perceptions of history, religion, and the synthesis of classical and Christian traditions. Readers and scholars will find a rich tapestry of narratives that define the medieval world's understanding of the past. General Estoria remains a vital text for those interested in medieval studies, Spanish linguistics, and the history of ideas, preserving the integrity of Alfonso X's vision to centralize and preserve human knowledge.
