BY an article of one of our Creeds, we are instructed to believe in the Holy Ghost, as 'the Lord and Giver of life, '--that is, of the inner life, of the spiritual life, of the life of God in the soul of man. Hence, in more or less developed form, the Church has never been without some knowledge of this Divine influence. Declared to have been at work in the rebellious struggles of the antediluvian world; experienced, in continually enlarging measure, by holy men in the times of Moses, and David, and the Prophets, --it becomes more expressly recognised under the new dispensation, as the one efficient cause in the production of all personal religion. To the believer in Christ Jesus, as he journeys through the wilderness of this world, it takes the place of the pillar of cloud: 'As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.' To those who are afraid to lift up holy hands to God, because they see thereon the prints of an ancient servitude, it becomes a new voice and a new tongue: 'Ye have not received the spirit of 'bondage again to fear; but ye have received 'the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.'
