Plants of Acacia tortilis, Balanites aegyptiaca, and Zizyphus mauritiana were monitored in terms of quantitative phenology at the IRD Research Center in Dakar. The branching process results in four different orders of growth units (GU) in A. tortilis, six in B. aegyptiaca, and five in Z. mauritiana in nine-month-old seedlings. The length and number of different GUs in individuals of the same species are similar. GU1 is longer in A. tortilis and shorter in Z. mauritiana; it is intermediate in size in B. aegyptiaca. The largest number comes from GU3 in A. tortilis (192) and GU4 in B. aegyptiaca (152). The number of leaves at the scale of the different orders of UC and the individual is greater in A. tortilis. Variations in leaf area per unit and per unit length in A. tortilis and Z. mauritiana indicate that leaf size does not depend on the order of UC. The variations are significant in B. aegyptiaca; they reveal a difference in size at the leaf level. At the individual level, the leaf area is high in B. aegyptiaca (268 cm ).
