Aegina in Stone and Light is a sequence of lyrical poems set on a small Greek island whose history stretches from deep geological time to the present day. Moving across its shores, terraces, harbours and hills, the poems approach Aegina through its landscape-natural and built-its people, and the quiet recurrences of daily life. In these visible forms lie layered traces of earlier worlds: memory held in stone, path, wind and water.
Across centuries the island has been shaped by geology and climate, by trade and empire, by war, abandonment and return. These forces have left their mark not only on the terrain but on those who inhabit it. The poems follow these interwoven histories, attentive to how human action meets larger currents of time.
At the scale of individual lives, choice and responsibility remain central. At broader scales, change unfolds through accumulation, contingency and constraint. The island becomes a lens through which to consider how societies endure-formed both by deliberate acts and by circumstances beyond their control.
Themes of continuity and fragility run throughout. Belonging emerges not as possession but as participation over time. Survival requires adaptation; endurance carries both cost and dignity. Human presence moves within rhythms that cannot be mastered, where meaning arises through attention rather than control.
Taken together, these poems offer a meditation on place, memory and responsibility-on how landscapes carry what has preceded them, and how we live within limits that are never entirely of our own making.
This book forms part of the Greek Continuum-a wider poetic chronicle of Greece's past and how it shaped modern Greece. Published by Kolonna Press.
