He asked the question nobody thinks to ask.
Not when God came, or how, but whether it made any sense for him to come at all. Thomas Aquinas opens his treatment of the Incarnation by stating every argument against it first, more strongly than his opponents had managed, and only then replying.
That habit is why he is worth twenty-five days. He is not trying to win. He is trying to see clearly, and he assumes you can too.
What you get each day- A short reflection in plain modern prose, written for someone with about fifteen minutes.
- A passage from Aquinas himself, drawn from Part III of the Summa Theologiae in clear modern English and cited to its exact question and article, so you can look it up and check it.
- A closing thought and a one-line prayer.
The twenty-five readings run from the first of December to Christmas morning as a single line of thought, not a set of unrelated meditations:
- The Waiting (days 1 to 6): whether it made sense for God to come at all, and why he took so long.
- The Fittingness (days 7 to 12): the body he took, and from whom.
- The Yes (days 13 to 18): the woman who was asked, and what her answer meant.
- The Child (days 19 to 24): who the child is, and who was told first.
- Christmas Morning (day 25).
Four short interludes, after days 6, 12, 18 and 24, let you catch your breath between movements.
By the twenty-fifth you will not only have kept Advent. You will have read one of the most careful minds in Christian history working through what Christmas actually claims.
