Henry faces hostility from Hans, the family's oldest son, who lost his grandfather in the war and resents Americans. Over time, through shared experiences during Oktoberfest and Christmas, Henry realizes Hans is simply a grieving boy carrying a heavy burden.
Henry befriends another American boy, Henry Huckabee, and together they explore Mainz like treasure hunters, discovering Cold War relics, sneaking through underground tunnels, investigating concrete bunkers, and visiting castles along the Rhine River.
