This volume presents An Address on the Propriety of Continuing the State Geological Survey of California, delivered by J. D. Whitney before the legislature in Sacramento on January 30th, 1868. Whitney makes the case for the value and importance of the geological survey to the state's development and understanding of its natural resources.
Appended to the main address are two letters to the governor, providing further insight into the progress and challenges faced by the Geological Survey. This document offers a valuable historical perspective on the early scientific exploration and mapping of California, and the efforts to establish a comprehensive understanding of its geological landscape.
