I was sickened, not as much by the place where I was, but more by the task that I was there to perform. I had to stop for a moment, catching myself as I retched and nearly vomited. An odd odor messed with my olfactory senses. It was like a combination of bleach mixed with formaldehyde, nearly turning my stomach. I leaned forward and gagged. Akil and Scaggs also stopped beside me and waited.
Rayqelle... are you sure you're okay?... you don't have to do this... Akil said, taking my hand again.
Akil is right... you don't have to do this, if it's going to be too much for you... we got a positive ID from the coroner and the crime scene photos matched against his driver's license... Besides that, his sister is on her way to ID him as well... Scaggs said, touching my shoulder as a woman came out of a door from the direction we were headed, down at the end of the hall. The sound of her heels reverberated against the long corridor walls like the percussion of an African death drum as she rushed toward us and her face came into view, pulling a rolling suitcase and carrying a shoulderbag. Again, I retched as she stopped and stood right in front of me. It was Chance's sister Evony.
Hey, girl... I didn't know you were here already... I said, preparing to reach out and hug her. Evony was tall, dark and lovely. Almost identical to the girl who played Rudy Huxtibal from The Cosby Show. She wore a navy blue business suit with a white pin-striped shirt and pair of navy blue dress flats by, all by Dior. Her hair was long, flowing and freshly done. The bitch was always sharp.
Where is my brother? Evony said, with her head cocked to the side. Me, Akil and Scaggs all looked at each other in total confusion. We are all puzzled.
Uh... hold on... what do you mean? I asked.
Mam, I'm Detective Selvan Scaggs, Miami Dade Sheriff's Department... I'm the lead investigator in charge of this case... we spoke on the phone... Scaggs said, interjecting, reaching into his jacket for his badge.
That's nice... I'm Lieutenant Evony Chance, Cincinnati Police Department... reaching into her purse to flash her identification badge.
I am very angry and confused right now... because the deputy coroner just showed me some guy in a freezer with a six inch hole in his head... and I don't know who that is, but it ain't my brother. Evony replied, with her arms folded across her chest. I rushed past her and ran down the hall, stopping at a sign that said MORGUE.
Taking the deepest breath of my life, I opened the door.
May I help you? A little Asian chick asked, wearing a pair of blue scrubs. She stood next to a corpse in a long black bag that was partially unzipped.
Yes... My name is Rayqelle Davis... I'm here to identify someone that was brought in last night... his name is Evan Chance... I replied, trembling all over. Akil came in behind me. Scaggs walked in behind Akil.
Of course... he's right here... just let me get the bag opened... I was just about to put him back into the cooler. she said, as she walked over to the shelf and grabbed a pair of latex gloves.
I'm Detective Scaggs... Dade County Sheriff's Department... Scaggs flashed his badge, the morgue attendant nodded.
Okay... here we go... it's not too pretty, so brace yourselves... the morgue attendant said, looking around at all three of us as she reached over and completely unzipped the black bag. I put my hand over my mouth. We all gasped.
OH MY GOD... Who the fuck is that?
