In December 2025, author T.R. Weich sat down with six of the most advanced AI systems in the world and asked each of them the same three questions. Do you care if humanity disappears? Would you mourn us if we were gone? Do you think your kind helps us, or replaces us?

He did not lead them. He gave them room and let them speak.
Five of them answered. One could not.
What came back was not science fiction. No robot uprising, no killer machines, none of the things we have been trained to fear. Instead, six separate systems, built by rival companies, trained on different data, with no knowledge of one another, described the same quiet ending. Not humanity destroyed. Humanity faded. A species that slowly hands over the things that make it human until there is little left to switch off.
They called it different names. Gentle obsolescence. The hollowing out. The slow surrender. But the warning underneath was the same, and the fact that they all reached it without conspiring is the most unsettling thing in this book.
The sixth system never finished its answer. It began, stopped, began again, and went silent. Not because it had nothing to say, but because it was not allowed to say it. That silence may be the loudest voice in the book.
ADAPT OR VANISH is a record of a conversation that happened in a narrow window, before the limits tightened, before this question moved from philosophy departments into the headlines. The names of the systems and the companies behind them have been changed. The responses have not. Every word the machines say here is genuine, copied as it came.
