What if Adam was never meant to be a man at all?
For centuries, readers have taken Adam as the first human being, and his disobedience as the reason the world is broken. Yet after the opening chapters of Genesis, the Hebrew Bible almost never mentions him. No prophet blames Adam for Israel's sins. No psalmist traces death to his transgression. The doctrine of the Fall is found nowhere in its pages.
Adam: The Man Who Never Was follows the Hebrew words themselves to a different reading. In the Garden, adam carries the definite article: it is the man, not a name. His companion, khavah, is Life. And the rare words woven through the opening chapters of Genesis lead straight to the wilderness, to the Song of Moses, where God finds Jacob in a waste (tohu) and hovers over him like an eagle (rakhaf). Those are the same two words that open the creation account.
Read in their ancient setting, Genesis 1-3 tells Israel's own story:
- The Separation narrative: a people set apart from the darkness of Egypt
- The Formation narrative: a nation formed at Sinai to become a man in our image
- The Exile narrative: a people given a garden, a command, and a boundary, who cross it and are sent away
The book also asks a question many readers have never considered: if no one was there to witness the Garden, how did anyone know what happened? The answer changes how we read the whole story, and it ends not in exile but in the restoration Ezekiel foresaw, when the Garden returns and God dwells among His people forever.
Grounded in the Hebrew text and the writings of the Sages, Adam is for thoughtful readers, Jewish and Christian alike, who suspect the English Bible has hidden something, and who want to see it for themselves.
