Throughout this sermon we will be looking at the life of Abram and reflecting on our own lives in our walk with Jesus Christ. Abram followed the same Living God that we follow today. Throughout this remarkable journey of faith and trust in the Living God, we see a resemblance of our journey on the same path. This journey begins by God calling His people out from the world to live a life that glorifies Him. Just as Abram didn't belong to his former life any more, we also do not belong to our former life. But we are called to Get out.
The cost of getting out of the old way of doing things and the old way of living, means that we will lose friends and family just as Abram did. God frequently reminded Abram that He was his reward. The same promise applies to us today that is, God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is our reward. As Abram had many promises from God, he walked faithfully with God not seeing the promises ahead of time. We have promises from God too and we cannot see these things ahead of time, but we know they are there by faith. Hebrews tells us: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.[1]
Even though we walk by faith and not by sight, we can still mess up from time to time like Abram did. If we have been saved by grace through faith and we have come out of the world and been converted, God always makes a way for us to come back to Him again when we do mess up. Abram lived this pattern of life too and called out to the Lord when he messed up. We also see throughout this journey that we cannot understand God's plan and what doors might be opened or closed to us, but God knows. In our own human efforts we try and make things happen by making bad decisions and God intervenes on our behalf.
Abram was living in a land that was occupied with pagans who worshipped other gods. We dwell in the midst of a people who worship all kinds of gods. What did Abram do whilst he was dwelling with pagans? He praised and called on the name of the Lord openly. Abram wasn't afraid of the pagan culture and neither was he tempted to worship their gods. Abram had heard the voice of the Living God and followed the truth and evangelising about the true Living God to all around him.
Our journey ends with Abram seeing the Lord his God and receiving confirmation of God's promise to him. God never left Abram alone but came to him every time he felt discouraged and tended to him as a father tends to his child. This book is a three part series into Abram's walk with God and throughout this series, we will see Abram's little faith grow into great faith. Even though for a time, Abram struggled to understand how the promises of God would be fulfilled, in the third book of this series, we will see Abram believing that God can even raise the dead if He wanted to.
In the same way, we all start out with little faith, as small as a mustard seed and over time, our faith increases as we see more of God and His glorious nature. As our faith is increased, we see more of the promises that will be given to us in heaven and less of the concerns that surround us in this world. By God's grace, He has given each one of us a measure of faith and we are told to use the measure of faith that we have, to produce fruit with it and in doing so, we build up treasures in heaven.
