Chief Olayiotan Abejoye is a respected kingmaker in Ajibogun, Nigeria. His authority rests on royal tradition, ancestral customs and spiritual powers he has trusted for years. When he travels to Dallas to visit his son Bamidele, he expects a joyful family reunion. Instead, his arrival unsettles Bamidele's Christian household.
Bamidele's wife, Laide, fears Abejoye's incantations and sacred gourd, especially as their son Gboyega faces troubling spiritual attacks. Tension grows between husband and wife, while Bamidele hides an affair with Dedun, the choir director at their church. Across the ocean, Abejoye's rivals in Ajibogun continue to pursue him through the spiritual world.
After a bitter family dispute, Abejoye leaves Bamidele's home and stays with their pastor. There he hears the gospel and gives his life to Jesus Christ. His new faith frees him from the powers he once served, but his former allies regard his conversion as a betrayal. They intensify their attacks, sending the dreaded masquerade Gbonrabiijo to Dallas.
Abejoye learns to trust Christ in the face of danger. Yet his family's wounds also demand attention. When Dedun's pregnancy exposes the continuing affair, Bamidele must confess his wrongdoing, Laide must confront her pain, and Dedun must reckon with her own broken marriage. Abejoye helps guide them towards repentance and reconciliation. The feared kingmaker begins to become a peacemaker.
In the final part of the story, enemies in Nigeria and America launch further attacks against Abejoye. A mysterious elderly man repeatedly warns him to remain humble, patient and prayerful. When Abejoye responds proudly to a visiting delegation of traditionalists, he suffers a painful affliction. The elderly man reveals Himself as Jesus Christ, the Defender who has protected him since his conversion. Abejoye repents and learns that even his victories must never become a source of pride.
Meanwhile, Chief Oluoje, one of Abejoye's former enemies, receives healing and begins preaching Christ openly in Ajibogun. As the town prepares for an open-air revival, Abejoye sets out for home. He returns with a desire to reconcile with those he has offended and share the faith that changed his life.
Moving between Yoruba tradition and life in America, Abejoye: The Kingmaker is a story of family conflict, spiritual warfare, forgiveness and transformation. It follows a man who once helped choose earthly kings as he learns to serve the King of Kings.
