Abbeyleix is a small town with a big history. Its streets and buildings tell of a planned estate town, of market days and quiet lanes, of houses that have stood for generations. This book collects the memories, legends, and everyday stories of the people who lived and worked here, continuing the work begun in The Stories I Was Told, and Grandad, Tell Us Another Story. These are the voices of a place: funny, plaintive, stubborn, and proud.
In these pages you will find local characters, old rivalries, folk tales, and the small, sharp moments that make up community life. Some stories have been told for decades around kitchen tables and at fairs; others were rescued from fading memories and family albums. Together they form a portrait of Abbeyleix as it was and as it is remembered.
About the Author
Noel Burke has a lifelong interest in local history and has spent many years researching the people and places of Abbeyleix. Retired since 2005, he enjoys time with his grandchildren and continues to collect and record stories from the town. He lives in Abbeyleix with his wife Patricia. For more tales of the town read his earlier books The Stories I Was Told and Grandad Tell Us Another Story.
