I thought I was going to die in Vietnam. So I bought a motorcycle and started saying goodbye.
At eighteen, with a draft notice in my pocket and about a month left of the life I'd chosen, I climbed onto a small, oil-burning Yamaha 350 and pointed it west to California, to see my grandparents one more time while I still could.
I survived the Army. I kept the motorcycle.
What started as a practical sprint to say goodbye turned into a lifelong conversation with distance, doubt, and the stubborn joy of going anyway. Loveland Pass to the Virgin River. Midnight across the Mojave. The orange-blossom air of Escondido at the end of it. Fifty years of riding the American West and beyond - deserts, mountain passes, breakdowns, friendships, close calls, grief, and the particular freedom that shows up when the road ahead is the one thing still asking something of you.
I wrote this the way I've tried to live most of my life since - in the tradition of Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, with something of the same restless, inward spirit as Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It's a memoir of momentum: a young man learning patience from a buzzing two-stroke, courage from empty deserts, and clarity from the way a map looks different once you've had to earn every mile of it.
I trace a half-century of departures and returns - star-clotted desert skies, Ozark roads that teach your hands what your eyes can't see, Army years that promised war and delivered paperwork, machines that insisted or endured, and the people who climbed on behind me and trusted the lean.
This isn't a book about conquering miles. It's about making terms with them. The apex was never a line on the pavement - it's the moment you decide to commit. It's a reckoning with arrival itself, with the fact that every driveway still carries the urge to keep rolling past.
For decades, motorcycles gave me sanctuary and a way to keep moving. What starts out here as one more travel memoir turns, before long, into something else - a later-life reckoning shaped by the places I rode, the people I loved, and the choices that stay with a man long after the road itself is gone.
Somewhere along the way, the machinery starts to fall away.
Underneath the miles, there's another journey. A woman I met in a waiting room, decades back. A moment I failed to walk into. A lost love that fifty years of riding never quite managed to outrun.
What I set out to write as a road book became, without my entirely meaning it to, a letter to someone who never knew she was being written to. Part travelogue, part late-night philosophizing, part confession I put off far too long - this is my reckoning with the roads not taken, and the plain fact that some distances aren't measured in miles. They're measured in moments a man fails to enter.
After a lifetime of putting miles behind me at speed, I found the hardest distance left wasn't on any map. It was the one between what I felt and what I was willing to say.

It closes with A Bench on the Moon, where I finally say, out loud, what I owe to the woman who rode quietly behind all those miles without ever knowing it - part conversation with her, part motorcycle thoughts, part poetry filling the spaces the conversation never reached.
