My name is Greg Ratliff. I am a minister in Central Florida. I began writing poetry just for fun one evening, and before long I found out that I was making people smile at my everyday thoughts. Soon people were asking where I was coming up with my ideas. Oh, just anywhere and everywhere, I answered, not really giving much thought to the question at the time. Some people asked when I was going to write my book and publish my writing. Probably not ever, I answered. This is just for fun, I said. The next thing I knew, I was writing often as a way to unwind from the day. Maybe I could put enough of these poems together for a book, I thought. Well, low and behold, I did just that! Some of these poems were written for specific occasions, but again, most are just for fun. Some reflect people and experiences I have had in the past. Others just reflect how I have felt about life. Whatever these poems mean to you, please keep in mind that they are just for fun. And yes, I did write them using the name Smilin' Fred. I first met Smilin' Fred years ago. His real name is Derf Nilms, but he likes Smilin' Fred, which is Derf Nilms spelled backwards. I think it was during an identity crisis I was experiencing. Anyway, like the reason behind the poems, Smilin' Fred emerged out of a need just to have fun. Are you beginning to see a common thread? I do; I enjoy having fun. And so I hope you will have as much fun reading these poems as I did writing them. May your days always be filled with a smile and a laugh or two. And may you share the moments of your life as I have shared with you! Smilin' Fred
