A Lady Trader In The Transvaal (1882) is a memoir written by Sarah Heckford, an Englishwoman who traveled to South Africa in the late 19th century to start a trading business. The book offers a unique perspective on the colonial period in South Africa, as Heckford was one of the few women who ventured into the male-dominated world of business and trade. Heckford's account of her experiences in the Transvaal region is both informative and entertaining, as she provides detailed descriptions of the people, customs, and landscapes she encountered. She also shares her struggles and triumphs as a female entrepreneur in a time when women were not encouraged to pursue such endeavors. The book covers a range of topics, from Heckford's initial journey to South Africa and her interactions with the local communities, to her efforts to establish a successful trading business. She also writes about the political climate of the time, including the tensions between the British and the Boers, and the impact of the First Boer War on her business and personal life. Overall, A Lady Trader In The Transvaal is a fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in the history of South Africa, the role of women in business, and the experiences of colonial-era travelers. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
