Dense forest covered coastal Virginia when English colonists first sailed up the James River in May of 1607. Native American Indians had been living in the forest, finding food, medicine, and other necessities of life for thousands of years. They shared knowledge of Virginia's trees, and other useful plants, with the colonists. But by the end of America's Revolutionary War in the 1780s, the forest across Virginia's lower peninsula from Jamestown to Yorktown was gone. Colonists exported their first cargo of Virginia timber to England within a year of their arrival, and other trees were cleared to plant crops like tobacco, to build homes and fortifications, and for battlefields.
