A Fool There Was is a novel written by Porter Emerson Browne. The story follows a successful and respected lawyer named John Schuyler, who leaves his wife and children to pursue a relationship with a seductive and manipulative woman named The Vampire. As his obsession with her grows, Schuyler's career and reputation begin to crumble. The novel explores themes of temptation, morality, and the destructive power of desire. It was first published in 1909 and has since become a classic of American literature. It is of necessity that a story such as this should be episodical, lapsical, disconnected. Its inception lies in two countries, and of different people. And it is, in its beginnings, a story of contrasts. So one may be permitted again to say: At a time when pompous, ponderous, white-whiskered, black-suited old Dr. DeLancey was engaged in bringing to the daughter of Kathryn Blair a posthumous baby brother that, in the mystery of things, turned out after all to be a sister, a stranger chanced to be riding at dusk through the deep shades of the Bois du Nord, in Brittany. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
