Parsons, Kansas, 1873 -- Miss Lucy Forbes travels West to assist her father, a railroad detective, with a difficult assignment. One that pits him against a railroad executive reputed to be as treacherous as he is charming. She anticipates adventure, even dangerous thrills to add to the stories she writes. What she doesn't expect is how quickly she becomes ensnared in a torrid love affair and a deadly mystery.
Henry Stevens is an enterprising railroad pioneer who dreams of building an empire stretching from Chicago all the way to Mexico City. He makes it as far as Texas before he is caught up in a whirlwind of crime and corruption. He isn't the villain Lucy fears he may be, but he is an intense, driven man, guided by principles forged during an impoverished childhood.
While fighting for his job and his life, Henry is drawn into a stormy relationship with the independent Miss Forbes, who pens tales about heroism and high ideals. Lucy defies him at every turn. She won't settle for anything less than complete freedom and a level of honesty that is frankly impossible in the cut-throat world of railroad politics. Never has Henry had to work so hard for something he wants, and he wants Lucy. But he also wants the Katy.
