A Benedictine-Anglican Breviary brings the ancient rhythm of daily prayer into the life of the contemporary Anglican Christian.
Rooted in the Anglican tradition and shaped by the wisdom of Benedictine spirituality, this volume provides a complete pattern of prayer for the day-from Morning Prayer through the Little Hours, Evening Prayer, and Compline. It is intended for clergy and laity alike: for use at home, in church, while traveling, or wherever one seeks to order the day around prayer and Holy Scripture.
Drawing upon the classical language and devotional inheritance of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, the Breviary brings together the Daily Offices, Psalter, collects, and other resources for prayer in a single portable volume.
At its heart is a new two-year lectionary designed especially for this Breviary. Its extended cycle of Scripture readings encourages a steady, prayerful encounter with the biblical text rather than isolated selections. Appropriate readings from the Apocrypha are included within the cycle, together with alternate readings for principal holy days.
The Breviary is informed by the Benedictine conviction that prayer is not something added to the Christian life but a rhythm by which the whole of life may be offered to God. Its purpose is therefore simple: to help make the day itself a life of prayer.
Whether prayed in its entirety or adapted to the circumstances of daily life, A Benedictine-Anglican Breviary offers a traditional yet practical way of joining Scripture, prayer, contemplation, and work in a common rhythm.
