Most 99 things books for this age are made of crafts, recipes and slime. Pleasant, and forgotten by March.
This one is made of the things that are actually difficult at eleven.
Saying the unpopular thing out loud. Being visibly bad at something in front of people who are good at it. Sitting down next to the girl nobody sits with - and doing it in a way that does not make her feel like somebody's good deed. Asking an adult a question you feel stupid asking. Admitting you were wrong without adding the clause that takes it back.
Ninety-nine small acts of courage. None of them cost anything.
NINE SECTIONS
- Say it out loud - disagreeing, asking for what you want, saying I don't know
- Be bad at something - starting in front of people, keeping going after being laughed at
- The other person - apologising properly, letting someone else be right
- Do it alone - the things that are harder without a friend beside you
- Make something nobody asked for - with no prize attached
- Find out - real questions, and learning something with no use
- Handle it - when plans collapse, when you forgot, when it is unfair
- Be useful - competence at home, unasked and unthanked
- The long ones - eleven missions that take weeks, not minutes
EVERY MISSION HAS A SMALLER VERSION
Because some days you cannot face the full one, and a book that only works on your brave days is not much of a book. The smaller version is never framed as failing.
WRITTEN TO HER, NOT AT HER
No queen. No sparkle. No you're amazing just as you are. She is eleven, not five, and she can spot condescension in a single sentence. This is written to her as an equal with less experience - warm, dry, and taking her seriously.
FOR WHOEVER IS BUYING IT
There is a note for you at the front. Nothing in this book touches weight, food, appearance or bodies - not once, not in passing, not positively. Nothing is physically risky, nothing sends her anywhere alone, and nothing involves posting, messaging or putting her face or name online. Where a mission touches a friendship ending or a long low stretch, it points her toward a trusted adult.
And one piece of advice in that note that matters more than the rest: do not ask her every week how it is going.
