He was on his way to Àṣedó to divine for a king when the rain caught him.
There was a hut, and a woman alone in it. She took the load off his head, fed him, and did not ask him to leave. In the morning, mid-sentence, he saw the pale patches on her skin and the stumps of her fingers - and he went, without asking her name.
She bore his daughter alone in the forest and waited two years. Then every morning she poured water on the ground in front of herself and cursed the man who had done it.
Not one of his wives conceived.
He made every offering sixteen times over and still did not remember her. But the sacrifice moved her - out of the forest, holding a small girl's hand, timed for the day he was leaving. She blocked his way in front of the whole town, and when the guards lunged, he stopped them.
Then he called every Babaláwo in Ilé Ifẹ̀ and had her healed, and gave the five girls to the priests who cured her: ọmọ ìyá tà a pa ẹ̀tẹ̀ bà - the child of the woman whose leprosy was cured.
That is where Apẹ̀tẹ̀bà comes from. She is never named in the verse. The title every Babaláwo's wife carries is her monument.
A painted graphic novel retold from Ọ̀bà rà Ògúndá, with the Yorùbá verse, a note on the Odù, and the meaning of the name.
