This book examines the moral foundations and practical limits of democratic politics at a time of heightened polarisation, migration pressures, and institutional strain. It treats political theory not as abstraction but as embedded in contemporary conflicts, where the gap between normative commitments and political realities has become increasingly visible.
The first part explores political compromise in an era in which it is often seen less as a democratic virtue than as weakness or betrayal. Drawing on developments in the United States and Europe, it shows how polarisation, changing party systems, and digital communication environments have eroded the conditions that once made compromise possible, replacing it with more conflictual and unstable forms of politics.
The second part focuses on migration and border control, one of the most contested issues in contemporary democracies. By linking normative debates about borders and membership to recent empirical developments, it demonstrates how states navigate tensions between humanitarian obligations, domestic political pressures, and demands for control, often producing morally ambivalent outcomes.
Across both themes, the book argues that democratic governance today is defined by ongoing negotiation between competing values under conditions of constraint. It offers a grounded account of how democracies manage disagreement and responsibility in a rapidly changing political environment.
