In 47: The Decay of the Union, Eric Bray takes an unflinching look at American politics through the eyes of an ordinary citizen who believed the promises, supported the movement, and then decided it was time to examine the receipts.
This is not a book written from the safety of the political sidelines. Bray openly acknowledges where he stood, what he believed, and why. But when promises collide with consequences, loyalty cannot be the final answer.
The standard must be something greater.
Moving from kitchen tables and grocery bills to Washington, Wall Street, foreign policy, healthcare, public lands, political influence, animal welfare, government spending, and the national debt, 47 asks readers to consider who benefits from the decisions made in their name-and who ultimately pays the price.
Along the way, Bray examines uncomfortable questions that neither political party has much incentive to ask. What happens when Americans excuse behavior from their own side that would outrage them if the other side did it? When did elected officials become celebrities instead of employees? Why do ordinary citizens continually bear the consequences while powerful institutions, corporations, donors, and political insiders seem to operate under a different set of rules?
And perhaps most importantly: When did defending a politician become more important than defending a principle?
Bray does not ask Republicans to become Democrats. He does not ask Democrats to become Republicans. He asks both to do something considerably more difficult:
Reverse the jerseys.
Apply the same standard. Demand the same accountability. Follow the evidence wherever it leads-even when the conclusion is uncomfortable.
Direct, conversational, extensively sourced, deeply personal, and often unexpectedly funny, 47 is not written for political insiders. It is written for the people who work, pay taxes, raise families, struggle with grocery bills, care about their communities, and increasingly wonder whether anyone in Washington remembers who government is supposed to serve.
Behind the policies and statistics are human consequences: families trying to survive, veterans who answered their country's call, animals without lobbyists, citizens watching their public institutions drift farther from the people they were created to represent, and future generations who will inherit whatever America leaves behind.
47: The Decay of the Union is ultimately not an argument about left versus right.
It is an invitation to step outside the political team long enough to ask a simpler question-one that applies regardless of party, personality, or power:
Is it right?
Because if America is going to find its way forward, perhaps that is where the conversation must begin.
