On a January evening, Jeanette Ralston never made it home. Her car was found nose-down in a drainage ditch beside a quiet bridge, the engine off, the keys still in the ignition. There was no sign of a struggle. No one had heard anything. The investigation that followed was thorough, methodical and, in the end, powerless against the limits of 1970s forensic science.
Her sister Carol kept the phone number. Through three moves, two area code changes, and forty eight years, she never let it go because it was the number the police had called, once, to tell her Jeanette was gone.
Then, in a climate controlled evidence room three states away, a forensic technician pulled a routine cold case for a database sweep. Inside was a cigarette pack, sealed in plastic since the year it was found. What she uncovered would reopen a case everyone had stopped expecting to close.
The Forty Eight Year Man is the true story of a wait that outlasted a generation reconstructed from court records, police reports, and public archives into a narrative as suspenseful as it is unflinchingly human.
