The first two voices ask what the machine can do. The third asks who said it could.
Somewhere today a person will be told no by something that cannot be asked why. A claim will close. An account will freeze. An application will be scored and set aside. In most cases the outcome will be correct. This is not a book about machines being wrong. It is a book about what happens when they are, and about the strange new fact that there is frequently nobody to tell.
Civilization spent eight hundred years building an answer to one question: who authorized this. The notary. The warrant. The building permit. The pharmacist's second look. The surgical pause. The two keys that must turn together. Every one is a gate standing in front of a powerful action, and nearly every one was written after a funeral. Then we deployed the first technology in history that routes around all of them.
Emily Hartstone builds authorization infrastructure for a living, and she is alive in part because of the machines. This is not a warning shot from a critic. It is testimony from the receiving end, written by someone who refuses to give up either truth: the machines are the best thing that has happened to human capability in a lifetime, and we are operating them with a recklessness we would tolerate nowhere else that touches a human body.
