老卒是上世紀中期兩廣一代逃港群體中，對於多次逃港者的稱呼。本書作者借用為筆名，創作了這部自傳體小說，講述了中國從1950年代延續到1970年代末期的大逃港浪潮中的一个个案。
主人公杨帆是一名具備獨立思想的廣州青年，高中時被下放到農村支援農村建設。經歷多年人生曲折之後，他成為千万名对現實不滿，渴望以逃港改變人生境遇、尋求自由民主的青年中的一員。
本書記錄了杨帆惊心动魄、艱苦卓絕的多次逃港經歷，也通過杨帆的所見所聞，為那個時代形形色色的逃港青年们绘制了一幅群像，其中有像他一样的知识青年，有迷途知返的造反派，也有小偷，赌徒，普通農民、市民，等等。作者也記下了自己對於逃港的思考：1949年後由上層發動的歷次政治運動，並非真正的群眾運動。相反，為追求平安、美好的生活與自由民主而持續数十年的大逃港，才是真正的、自發的群眾運動。
書中还提供了極為豐富的逃港相關的技術與細節，從逃港路線的選擇，指南針、橡皮筏等的手工製造，到偽造身份(報流)、偽造介紹信(流霖)，再到逃港者中流行的行話，以及政治大氣候對逃港的影響，等等，堪稱一部小型的逃港百科。
