In English, the word kappa has been rendered as imp, sprite, goblin, kelpie, and water-monster. But the kappa is the kappa - a green, child-sized, turtle-backed water-creature with a dish of water on its head, a beak, webbed hands, an appetite for cucumbers, and a politeness that will bow back if you bow to it first. It is also a drowner of horses and children. The tradition has never reconciled the two, and never tried. 30 Nights with the Kappa is thirty literary retellings of Japan's most contradictory folk-creature, told in the quiet, exact register of Lafcadio Hearn. Across six sections - the canonical mechanics, the Edo scholars who tried to catalogue it, the caught kappa and its signed oaths, the comic and the trickster, the regional variants, and the elegiac endings. The creature accumulates its full strangeness one night at a time. Here is the kappa who left an arm in a stable and signed an oath to recover it. The kappa who took Buddhist orders and served two abbacies. The kappa-wife of the Echizen coast, married forty-one years. The wrestler of the Chikugo who taught a man bone-setting. And the kappa of Tōno, still in its pool - the one that bows back. The stories draw on the deep sources - Yanagita's Tōno Monogatari, Akutagawa's Kappa, the 1712 Wakan Sansai Zue, the 1820 Suiko Kōryaku and its twelve-variant scroll - and on the English collectors who first carried the creature west. Each night closes with a 一語 (ichigo): a single Japanese word from the story, taken apart and explained - its etymology, its register, the way it is actually used. Polite. Dangerous. Deeply strange. The dish is still full. The water is still deep.
