Prostitution in late 19th-century Kansas City, Missouri, involved madams, prostitutes residing in brothels, streetwalkers, prostitutes operating independently out of tents or cribs (lean-tos or shacks), and prostitutes who independently rented rooms from landlords (often saloon keepers). Typical madams employed from one to about fifteen girls. Many madams were single, divorced, or widowed but others were married, their husband in some cases being a partner in their business and living in their brothel. This three volume set enumerates Kansas City's 295 madams operating between 1869 and 1900, with extracts from historical records of their daily lives that were fraught with endless strife and struggle.
