作者温雅娟，动荡的文革年代出生于草原钢城包头，在黄沙漫漫的边塞小城度过物质极度匮乏的童年和少年，精神却一如草原骏马自由奔放，无拘无束。18岁时，怀揣当年烈士祖父未竟之学业梦想，以极优异的高考成绩放弃北大而进入北师大。毕业后担任大学会计教师若干年，外企财务总监若干年；移民加拿大之后，专业税务师若干年。育有两名学业出色的子女，父慈子孝，家庭美满。
本书是作者基于父亲的笔记与父女之间的多次交流，以父亲的口吻和自传的形式，首次开启的文学探索，也是作者与上个世纪的历史展开的无数次对话。疫情肆虐期间，作者闭门造车，笔耕不辍。历时三年，搁笔之时仍意犹未尽。
