The Metamorphic Pen
This collection brings together fifteen novellas and short stories by Qiaosheng Shen.
The titular novella, The Metamorphic Pen, presents a novel and striking concept, using Symbolism techniques to tell a realist story, with every detail laden with deep allegorical meaning. Yang Lemin, a prominent entrepreneur, becomes a helpless lamb at the mercy of Director K under the influence of the metamorphic pen. Both Yang Lemin and Zhang Huang, transformed into animals, lose even the slightest room to think before reaching the abrupt end of their lives. The narrative skillfully unfolds through a gradually immersive technique: the narrator becomes restless and sleepless upon seeing a piglet on Director K's drawing board, horrified to discover that he is slowly turning into a piglet himself. When all seems lost, the story takes an unexpected turn, revealing the complexity of human nature while upholding justice. In a moment of moral courage, the narrator sacrifices himself to destroy the Metamorphic pen, saving his benefactor Cao Danian and preserving the remnants of goodness nearly drowned in the stench of material corruption.
