Every entry gets the same five parts: the rule stated flat, its origin, the reason it persists, a worked example, and the specific error people make. Open it anywhere. Nothing here depends on your having read the entry before it.

Three things make this different from the shelf it sits on. The rules are sourced rather than asserted, so an entry will tell you that a convention comes from a particular decade and a particular commercial interest rather than from timeless good sense. The rules are not presented as universal: where the answer changes in Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Mumbai or Riyadh, the entry says so. And where a rule is folklore, it is labelled folklore.

The last section is the one that will be quoted. Rules 196 to 200 are five conventions people still repeat that stopped being true, each with the approximate period it died and the name of whoever is still repeating it.

Nothing in the book requires money. Most of it is about attention, timing, and knowing which question not to ask.
