Excerpt: ... tresses. Here there was an end to that sleepy quietude which marks the place where everybody has known everybody from the cradle to the grave. Here, too, was the beginning of that mild or malignant curiosity with which a community of strangers casually thrown together treats the question, Who is my neighbor? The rising sun's ray catches first the church steeple, and so of course the story of the rector came to the ears of all new-comers. But the true history was known only to the two wardens, and it may be held as an axiom that nothing short of the highest judicial power can compel a banker or a lawyer to tell what they wish to conceal. Those two callings are unapproachable in the art of baffling cunning questions and of conveying. the impression which they mean to be entertained. That impression was in this case that the wardens were entirely satisfied with their rector and that they expected all others to be content also. This left a free field to the gossips. One story was that the rector had been touched by the Romanizing tendencies then epidemic and had retired to a convent in Canada, or as some said Maryland, for the resolution of his doubts. Evidently he had resolved them, for there he was at St. Faith's as distinctively Anglican as ever. The supporters of this theory hinted that the only step yet needed to prove his orthodoxy was the practical renunciation of the tenet of celibacy. Another theory was that he was the victim of an unrequited passion for a beautiful heiress who was married about the time of his disappearance. His state of mind rendered immediate travel necessary, and of course the true reason could not be avowed.
