These two cello sonatas were written in 2004 and 2009. The first opens with a bold statement of confidence, which contrasts with a lyrical and dreamlike middle section. The second movement is an elegiac song - written when my mother was gravely ill. The third movement takes flight with an exuberant and feeling of perpetual motion. The serene and songful middle section is like a Barcarolle. The second cello sonata opens with a contented and peaceful mood. The second movement is a simple and majestic hymn to the American Spirit. The final movement, with its driving rhythms and final hymn, is full of joy and optimism.
