Two Of A Trade is a novel written by Martha McCulloch Williams and originally published in 1894. The story is set in the late 19th century and follows the lives of two young women, Mary and Polly, who are both struggling to make ends meet in New York City. Mary is a seamstress who works long hours for very little pay, while Polly is a shop girl who dreams of a better life. The two women meet by chance and quickly become friends, bonding over their shared struggles and aspirations. They hatch a plan to trade places for a day, with Mary taking Polly's job at the shop and Polly taking Mary's place at the sewing machine. The switch proves to be eye-opening for both women, as they gain a new perspective on each other's lives and the challenges they face.As the story unfolds, Mary and Polly navigate the complexities of their respective worlds, encountering both kindness and cruelty along the way. They also grapple with issues of class and gender, as they try to find their place in a society that often seems stacked against them.Despite the obstacles they face, Mary and Polly remain determined to improve their lives and pursue their dreams. Their friendship proves to be a source of strength and support, as they navigate the ups and downs of life in the city.Overall, Two Of A Trade is a poignant and insightful novel that offers a window into the lives of working-class women in late 19th century America. It is a story of resilience, friendship, and the power of human connection in the face of adversity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
